Application of Magnetic Floats

A float is an essential component of level sensors (also called level sensors). These reed-based sensors measure the fill level of containers, display it, or respond to high or low fill levels. They are used in all areas of life, from industry to household applications.

Construction of Magnetic Floats

Floats with integrated magnets are available in countless shapes, dimensions, and materials. In terms of construction, three variants are generally distinguished: the “foamed” variant, the “overmolded” variant, and the so-called hollow body version. Each type has advantages and disadvantages in specific applications.

Operating Principle of Magnetic Floats

The operating principle of magnetic floats is based on the interaction between the magnet in the float body and the reed contact in the tank. When the liquid level rises or falls, the float body moves accordingly. The magnet in the float influences the magnetic field at the reed contact, causing it to either close (normally open) or open (normally closed). This method of level detection is particularly effective because it operates completely contactlessly – there are no mechanical parts that could wear out. Moreover, the method is extremely robust and reliable, as magnetic floats can typically be used even under extreme conditions such as high temperatures, pressure fluctuations, and aggressive chemicals.

Do You Need a Custom Solution?

Customizing Magnetic Floats

Magnetic floats, also known as floats, are known for their use in level measurements and as switching elements in liquid containers. For custom magnetic floats, various specific adaptations or specifications can be made:

1. Float Material

The material of the float can be selected depending on the type of liquid it comes into contact with and the environmental conditions. Materials such as stainless steel, plastics, or special alloys are frequently used.

2. Float Size and Shape

The size and shape of the float can be adapted to achieve the required buoyancy and sensitivity for the specific application.

3. Magnet Type & Material

The type and material of the magnet are selected depending on temperature requirements and operating conditions. NdFeB, SmCo, or ferrite magnets with different coatings are frequently used.

4. Operating Temperature Range

The selection of materials and construction can be optimized for operation in a specific temperature range, even under extreme conditions.

Through these adaptations, magnetic floats can be effectively deployed for specific applications in a variety of industries such as water management, the chemical industry, food processing, and many other sectors.

FAQ Magnetic Floats

Are the magnets already installed in the floats?

Yes!

Is there only the standard?

No! Of course not. We can adapt our floats to your application.

Which materials do you offer?

Most of the floats are made of PP, PA, stainless steel, or PVC. If you require a special material, please let us know.

Which material is right for me?

That depends entirely on your application and the medium to be monitored. Contact us and we will work together with you to develop the appropriate magnetic float.

Can the magnetics in the float be customized?

Absolutely! We can adapt other magnetic materials, magnetization directions, and shapes after consultation and technical review.
